The myths of bullying
Bullying has a good many effects and ways that it is approached, however there are a few common myths that need to be understood.
Myth: You will always know if your child is being bullied
This is not true, as shown in the last page bullying sometimes goes under the parental radar. However hopefully by searching for those warning signs you might be able to figure it out for yourself
Myth: Bullying always involves physical bullying
Bullying can take the form of physical damage but there are also social, verbal, and cyber bullying. Physical bullying being the only one possibly resulting in physical damage
Myth: Bullies are from the high-end of the social pecking order.
On the surface it appears that bullies would be those from the top of the top in school and social situations. However 95 percent of the time social gain and power is a major motive for a bully.
Myth: Contact the bully's parents to help resolve the issue
Parent to parent meeting can go downhill quickly, don't contact them. Instead get in touch with the school.
Myth: Boys are more likely to get bullied
This can go hand in hand with the myth that bullying is physical, boys are often more physical so I believe that's where this myth came from. However, a 2007 survey showed that 3% more girls are bullied than boys, through rumor spreading and public embarrassment.
